About the Project

The diabetes management app was designed for individuals with type 1 diabetes, including children as young as one year old. This advanced adaptive hybrid closed-loop application offers:

● Automatic insulin delivery through compatible pumps based on real-time glucose readings
● Manual tracking of meals and injections
● Historical data insights
● Diabetes profile sharing for remote support

The Challenge

The client planned a diabetes management app for patients across the UK and EU. The product needed to support automatic insulin adjustments in real time, connecting to Bluetooth-enabled pumps and handling sensitive data. That made it subject to strict compliance requirements under European medical device regulations.

The client team began searching for iOS developers with at least mid-level experience. All candidates had to be fluent in SwiftUI, integrate Bluetooth connection, and set up a secure infrastructure built on AWS CognitoDB and Firebase. Beyond the tech stack, developers had to understand regulated data flows and contribute to audit-ready documentation.

However, the team lacked clarity on how to approach system-level decisions. While they focused on individual contributor roles, the overall app architecture remained undefined. This gap created a risk for long-term scalability and compliance. Most mobile engineers the client considered before didn’t meet these domain-specific demands. That’s when they turned to DOIT Software to extend their search with a global talent pool.

The Solution

During the first consultation, the client shared their hiring goals and outlined the project’s constraints. At this stage, it was essential to ensure that every developer would be able to meet the highest standards of code safety to pass future medical certification audits.

DOIT’s CTO recommended shortlisting middle-to-senior developers who had already worked in regulated environments. Developers with this background understand how even small implementation choices can affect medical certification. Without that experience, teams risk building features that later require rework because they don’t align with compliance expectations.

DOIT’s technical experts also emphasized the need for strong technical oversight. Because the system relied on iOS-specific technologies, we proposed to assign a lead iOS architect to guide engineering decisions throughout development.

For startups in healthcare, this role helps avoid scattered implementation choices that often result from short-term fixes. Instead, the architect sets a consistent technical direction that aligns early development with long-term certification goals.

After defining the role profiles, DOIT shortlisted candidates from our pre-vetted talent pool. Each developer had to undergo the structured vetting process:

  • Initial call with DOIT tech recruiters
  • Project-specific test task created by the DOIT tech team
  • Technical interview with DOIT senior engineers
  • Final interview with the client’s team

The recruitment team started with a pool of over 650 qualified candidates. After the initial screening call, selected applicants moved on to complete a technical assignment. Next, DOIT’s senior engineers reviewed each submission and handled technical interviews with the top candidates.

Finally, the client met around 10 highly skilled professionals (roughly the top 1.5%) who made it to the final interview round with the project team.

The Results

The team behind the diabetes management app approved four middle-to-senior developers and a lead iOS architect to join the project.

Once the team started working, DOIT Software maintained regular communication through feedback sessions and handled day-to-day developer support, including retention activities. The DOIT team also supported HR and tax operations, freeing the client’s internal team to stay focused on delivery.

All developers successfully passed the probation period and integrated into the client’s internal workflows. In collaboration with the in-house team, they passed rigorous certification processes to deliver a solution aligned with UK and EU healthcare regulations.
